TheFrom the left are astronauts Michael J. Massimino, Michael T. Good, both mission specialists; Gregory C. Johnson, pilot; Scott D. Altman, commander; K. Megan McArthur, John M. Grunsfeld and Andrew J. Feustel, all mission specialists.

The STS-125 mission will be the final space shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

There are so many exciting missions underway to provide us now and in future with unprecedented information about our solar system and our universe. In addition to this there were sample-return missions to comets, and landings on asteroids. The ESA (European Space Agency), too, is busy sending probes into space, as are the Asian space exploring nations Japan and the Peoples Republic of China. The latter is vowing to set foot on the Moon in the next decade (as are we - hoping to be there and greet them, when they land). Lastly, let's not forget about the ISS, the International Space Station, the Shuttle, and it's follow-on development, the new CEV, Orion, NASA's new Moon ship to be developed and built by Lockheed-Martin, or the private industry efforts, led by Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites, after the stunning success of his Space Ship One, to get the common (rich) man to take tours into suborbital and finally orbital near-Earth space, for $200,000 a ticket, marketed by Virgin Galactic.

The two Mars Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, still making tracks on the surface of Mars. (Click on image to find out what they're up to)
Rover Clock and many Rover links.

In addition to working with the rovers, Odyssey is currently exploring the northern polar region for a suitable landing site for Phoenix.

Missing in Action

Unfortunately, after 10 years of flawless operation, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) went out of control, lost solar array orientation, and apparently, for lack of sufficient operating power, shut itself down.

The banner will take you to the gallery of amazing images the orbiter took during its lifetime.

Launched in 1980, the Galileo probe was in 2003 crashed into Jupiter for a final data collection event. The banner will take you to the images of Jupiter and moons. Mission completed.

A Journey to the Explore the Origins of the Solar System

Built for 4 years and after 30 years still underway. Now moving 1 million miles a day, and by now about 15 billion miles from home.

It does not end there. We still have Hubble (HST) and the exciting Spitzer IR telescope bringing us incredible new information on the universe we are part of.

Hubble, aging and degraded, but still a hugely powerful astronomical tool, that finally was given the ok for a Shuttle refit mission.
