Kazakhstan

From Ulaanbataar I will fly to Almaty

Tadjikistan

From Dushanbe there are three flights a week to Kabul

Afghanistan

For in-country travel details, see map below

Because of the security situation in Kunduz, Afghanistan, I will be flying from Dunshanbe to Kabul. Once there I will see what the situation is at that time. My plans were to see Mazar-e-Sharif, Herat, and Panjshir, but insurgent presence may make that too risky. I will stay in the north of that country, since the south and south-east is a battlefield much of the time. I want to go now, before the NATO troops depart and the country decends once more into widespread ethnic/tribal and religious unrest and violence. Neither Pakistan nor India want a strong and stable Afghanistan aligned with the other. Red line indicates a road trips; Green arrows, flights between Afghan cities.

Macedonia

Once in Macedonia, I will try to make a short sidetrip to the birthplace of Alexander the Great, closing much of that loop, in Greece. The place is called Pella and just west of Thessaloniki. Everything on this map was once part of Macedonia when Aleaxander's father, Philip II conquered all of the surrounding lands. A second day trip goes to Veroia and the nearby Vergina , one of the highlights of this journey, the tomb of Philip II.
