While on the train to Aswan, at some small station, I managed to grab this picture through a grimy train window. I love how they seem to make the best of their world amongst themselves.

Elephant Island, itself a site of tombs and relics, to the left, splitting the Nile River at Aswan. To the right of the center you can see the great Coptic Cathedral

 

The ancient stone quarry in Aswan, the origin for much of the material for Egypt's great monuments. One of the most challenging tasks had to be carving the obelisks, to judge from the nearly finished but stress-cracked abandoned remains. The female pharaoh Hatsheptsut herself had four obelisks made here to be placed at the temple of Karnak.

 

 

The tool marks are clearly visible and show the methods used here to dig the obelisk painstakingly out of the solid rock
