Here is another nice recreational area. Accessible via cable car. A small mountain at the edge of town, in walking distance form the hotel, that sports a string of restaurants from which one can enjoy the sunset over Almaty. In the winter this would be the start of the local ski areas. Brave young men would clamber down the slope to tie ribbons (good luck wishes?) onto the limbs of the tree.
